Documentation is typically the first step in the conservation process following the initial consult with the client. It is always important to keep detailed records of all past treatments of objects. With any treatment, Restauratieatelier Green always provides clear written and photographic documentation. A treatment report consisting of what was done during the treatment, what materials were used, and detailed photo documentation is sent to the client after finishing the treatment.
Condition Mapping
In addition to standard photo documentation, condition mapping is a useful visual tool for large and/or complex objects. Detailed condition mapping allows the client to clearly see what deterioration is present on an object, and is particularly useful for larger projects and condition checks for museum objects going on loan. Restauratieatelier Green offers digital condition mapping services that can be provided to the client in multiple formats such as JPEG, TIFF, PNG, SVG, and PDF file types.
Condition Checks & Monitoring
Condition checks and monitoring are important preventive conservation measures to ensure that an object remains stable over time. Restauratieatelier Green offers condition checks and monitoring services for objects going on/returning from loan, objects that you may be concerned about deteriorating, or objects that are difficult to access on a regular basis. Condition checks and monitoring services are always provided with written and photographic documentation, condition mapping, and ultraviolet (UV) light and digital microscopic photographic images (when suitable).
Research
For certain projects, a more in-depth diagnostic or art historical research may be necessary. Retauratieatelier Green offers research services including but not limited to: an expanded range of photographic documentation techniques such as microscopic and ultraviolet (UV) imaging, a detailed written report about an object’s history and background including bibliographic references, and assorted diagnostic services. Research services can also entail future publication and presentation at conferences at the clients behest. The specific aim and output of the research can be discussed in a consultation and customised to the clients wishes.
Cleaning
Cleaning is often the first step in practical conservation treatments. Cleaning is not only a treatment in order to make your object look cared for, it is also important for preventing future deterioration by removing potentially harmful surface dirt and staining. Restauratieatelier Green is experienced in all types of cleaning including surface dusting, grease and grime removal, removal of old restoration materials, stain reduction and more for both porous and non-porous materials.
Adhering
It is often the case with glass, ceramic, and related materials that breakages occur. Whether it be a small chip on a porcelain vase, a mirror broken in two, or a shattered glass object, Restauratieatelier Green is trained in adhering broken objects of all types and sizes using professional conservation grade adhesives.
Filling
Filling is typically a treatment that is done to either physically stabilise a previously broken object, or to restore the object nearer to its original appearance. Restauratieatelier Green produces high quality fills on glass, ceramic, and related materials using stable professional conservation grade materials, and specialises in sculptural fills requiring precise and artistic coordination.
Retouching
Often the final step in a treatment process, retouching can visually integrate any fills and join lines to blend in with the original material of the object. Restauratieatelier Green has experience using dry and wet methods of retouching, including airbrush techniques, using only high-quality conservation and artists’ grade materials.
